E-bikes help social workers in Wirral solve the riddle of travel

A GROUP of social workers from Wirral can now commute to work on e-bikes, thanks to government funding.

The council spent part of the grant it received from the government’s Workforce Recruitment and Retention Fund (WRRF) – designed to support the recruitment and retention of adult social workers – on e-bikes for a number of staff employed by the partner organisation, Professional Carers Wiral.

E-bikes will allow caregivers who do not drive to get around the community faster and easier to complete their tasks.

Previously, they would have had to take public transport or use a traditional pedal bike to move between clients, which limits the number of people they can provide care to in a working day.

With support from local supplier, Off the Rock Cycles, the Professional Carers team have now received a number of e-bikes for use by their staff, along with other equipment and accessories needed to get them on the road. .

Graham Hodkinson, Director of Adults, Health and Strategic Commissioning at the Wirral Council, said: “We are really pleased to have been able to provide this practical support for carers and to make their day-to-day tasks a little easier.

“Not only are e-bikes a faster, cheaper and less strenuous way for them to get around between people’s homes, they are also kinder to the environment and will help the council meet its commitment to reduce emissions. carbon in response to the climate emergency.”

Gary Nagel, Director of Operations at Professional Carers, added: “A number of our employees do not have access to a vehicle or cannot drive, so we are always looking for innovative and creative ways to support them. , facilitating their work.

“This includes initiatives such as paid driving lessons and access to pool vehicles to help them get on the road.

“With the introduction of a fleet of e-bikes, it now allows our non-drivers to go further, for longer, with less effort.

“Working in the health and social care field is so rewarding that it is great that we can now use this alternative transport solution as another tool at our fingertips, to attract those considering a career in the field. care.

“Using e-bikes also promotes healthier lifestyles for our teams, reduces our carbon footprint and adds social value through the provision of equipment through a local Wirral company.”
