Beginning April 22, 2022, Denver residents can get an instant $400 rebate on the purchase of an eligible electric bicycle (e-bike) at a participating bike store. Residents with qualifying income may qualify for an instant rebate of $1,200. E-cargo bikes are eligible for an additional $500 instant rebate.

E-bikes are electric bikes with a motor that gives riders a boost. E-bikes use rechargeable batteries and travel up to 20 mph When using an e-bike to get around, you can:

  • Save thousands of dollars a year on fuel and maintenance by replacing daily car trips with e-bike rides.
  • Cycle longer distances and more challenging terrain
  • Put aside the worries of arriving sweaty at your destination
  • Reduce your carbon footprint when running errands or commuting to work

Participant Eligibility

Applicant must be a resident of Denver, Colorado and 16 years of age or older. Proof of a physical Denver is required. All documents submitted must be dated within one year of the request. Examples:

  • Computer-generated bill (electricity, credit card, doctor, hospital, etc.)
  • Bank statement
  • Pre-printed pay stub
  • First class mail (from a government agency or court)
  • Owner’s, lessee’s or motor vehicle’s current insurance policy
  • Mortgage, lease or rental agreement
  • Transcript or report card from an accredited school
  • Motor vehicle registration
  • USPS Change of Address Form (CNL107),

  • Individuals who are unable to provide acceptable documentation to verify their physical address in Denver, Colorado may be eligible to provide alternate documentation to meet the requirements.

To meet the “skilled income” requirement, the applicant must meet one of the following conditions:

Instant rebate amounts

  • $400 for all Denver residents, $1,200 for income-qualified residents
  • $500 extra for e-cargo bikes
  • The incentive cannot exceed the total purchase price
  • One electric bike per person

E-bike eligibility

All categories of e-bikes (I, II, III).

No minimum or maximum purchase price

Full suspension mountain bikes are excluded from the program

E-bikes must meet the following criteria:

  • The electric motor must be 750 watts or less and be capable of propelling the bike to a maximum speed of 20 mph on level ground without pedaling.
  • The vehicle must be equipped with a mechanism that (a) allows the rider to turn the motor on and off, or (b) prevents the motor from turning on or engaging before the e-bike reaches a speed of 3 km/h.
  • The motor should disengage when the operator (a) stops pedaling, or (b) releases the accelerator, or (c) applies a brake.
  • The engine cannot be powered by gas.
  • The motor must be able to be propelled by muscular power using the pedals, but it is not necessary to always pedal.

Eligibility for electric cargo bikes

Electric cargo bikes must have an extended frame designed to carry additional people or cargo. The E-cargo bike must meet the following criteria:

  • Designed to carry one or more passengers in addition to the pilot
  • Designed to carry heavy or bulky loads

OR e-cargo bikes are determined by having three of the following four

  • The bike has a published total weight capacity (rider + bike + cargo) of at least 400 lbs.
  • The bike has an extended frame designed to carry containers, bags, additional passengers or has included as a standard component a luggage rack.
  • The bike has additional fixing points (front/rear) to support the addition of racks/baskets/seats.
  • A bicycle marketed or advertised as a “cargo” or “utility bicycle” beyond what would be typical of an electric bicycle used for commuting.

To qualify for the e-bike rebate, the e-bike purchased must be purchased from a participating bike shop after the launch of the e-bike climate rebate program for use by the e-bike rebate claimant electric and not for resale.
