No injuries after 4-alarm fire at Monroeville bike shop

Eastbound Route 22 was reduced to one lane until around 8 p.m. Tuesday night in Monroeville after a four-alarm fire at Pro Bike + Run in the Miracle Mile shopping center.

Monroeville Chief No. 1 Jason Sonafelt said the fire was reported around 3:50 p.m. and all three businesses in the building, including AT&T and General Nutrition Center, were hit and evacuated.

“At this time, he is under investigation by the county fire marshal,” Sonafelt said around 5:30 p.m. “No one is injured at this time, the fire is under control and we are only carrying out overhaul operations at this time.”

Several windows on the top floor of Pro Bike were smashed as smoke billowed from the building. Sonafelt said he did not immediately know the extent of the damage.

He said warm afternoon temperatures played a part in fighting the blaze.

“Within minutes, we had crews overwhelmed with indoor heat and outdoor heat. That’s why we are now at four alarms with the other teams on the scene.

Sonafelt said crews extinguished a large fire in about an hour.

“Kudos to them for doing this,” he said.

Crews from Monroeville, Murrysville, Wilkins, Pitcairn, Penn Hills and Turtle Creek responded to the fire call.
