VeoRide deploys new electric bikes in Champaign-Urbana

Champaign, Ill. (WCIA) – Just in time for spring, VeoRide has rolled out a new e-bike for riders in Champaign-Urbana. Of the roughly 30 cities that have VeoRide bikes, Champaign and Urbana will join only a handful of others in bringing Cosmo-e Class II e-bikes to the streets.

Starting Friday, 100 new e-bikes will be available for riders to enjoy. They can go 15 miles per hour and they are powered by a throttle. Peddling is optional, which the company says makes them more accessible to people with different abilities and body types.

“You don’t need to use peddlers to make it work. It’s throttle-driven and they’re much more modern and up-to-date – much more streamlined for the user and for our mechanics,” said Shea Belahi, VeoRide Operations Manager for Champaign-Urbana.

Current Class I e-bikes will still be available. The company is looking to increase the number of new bikes by around 50 by the end of the month.

Belahi said VeoRide gets a lot of feedback from people saying they like bikes, but would also like to have scooters. While it’s the “best thing,” she said VeoRide wants to work with both cities to make it happen.

Belahi said if you find a misplaced vehicle and need to remove it from your property or simply move it to a centralized location, you can contact customer support at [email protected]
